Based on client reactions, getting permanent makeup is not as painful as many expect it to be! Although it is a tattoo, permanent makeup does not go as deep into the skin as traditional tattoos do. With proper depth, stretching and technique- it feels like light prickling. However, pain is of course subjective and everyone feels it differently!
I prefer to not use any pre-numb as it can change the texture of the skin, making it harder to insert pigment. There may be slight discomfort for the first layer of shading, but even so a vast majority of my clientele will say it is “not as bad” as they were expecting. After the skin has been broken, I do use secondary numb for relief. I use Ultra Duration Numbing Topical Aesthetic which contains Lidocaine HCI (Anesthetic) 4%; Tetracaine HCI (Anesthetic) 2%; Epinephrine (Vasoconstrictor) 0.05%. There is a stinging sensation that is felt but it quickly wears off.
There are ways to prevent pain for your session such as taking a Tylenol pill one hour before your session. Do not take Advil or Ibuprofen as it thins the blood; Avoid alcohol 48 hours and caffeine 24 hours prior to your appointments; Avoid booking your appointment during your menstrual cycle. Following pre-care information provided to you prep your body to be as comfortable as possible and help you get the best results from your session.
